June 2012

Details for our June 16, 2012 Fence Removal Project

On June 16th we plan to remove more than 1 mile of barbed wire fence in the Willow Creek area. This is the first time we’ve had a project at this location, and we are very excited to have this opportunity. The area includes prime wildlife migration paths that are obstructed by deteriorated fence, and also a long stretch of fencing that parallels part of the “wild and scenic” designated Snake River headwaters system. The project is average in difficulty (5 on a 1-10 scale), with most of the work on flat ground with a good amount of shade.  The Forest Service will also be providing an ATV to help remove the wire.

Willow Creek is located about 4.5 miles south of Hoback Junction, heading towards Pinedale, at the entrance to Camp Davis (recall the “fake” moose on the right side of the road, about 1 mile south of Camp Creek restaurant and bar).  Travel time from Smith’s is about 20 minutes, and we will park at the pullout by the main road.

We plan to meet at the project site by 9 AM. and work until about 3 PM.  For those of you wishing to car pool, please meet at the Smith’s parking lot at 8:30 AM (park by the Emergency Care center at the back of the lot).

We will provide water and snacks. New this year, please bring your own water bottle or hydration packs. We will provide water and Gatorade to fill your bottles. Additionally, due to the great location, instead of having you bring your own lunch, we plan to provide lunch:  grilled hotdogs and baked beans, courtesy of JHWF and “Chef” Kerry Murphy. If hotdogs and beans are not your favorite meal, you might want to pack your own lunch. Please also bring a portable chair so you can have a seat during lunch.

Please wear layered clothes and sturdy shoes and bring a rain jacket in case of storms. Sun protection (hat, sun glasses, sunscreen lotion) are also recommended, and will hopefully be necessary! We also recommend that volunteers check the status of their tetanus shots, in case of scratches from the old fencing material.  We will provide work gloves and tools.

Please RSVP to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you plan to attend and let us know at which meet-up point you will join us (Smith’s parking lot or at the Willow Creek pullout).  You can also send questions to this same email address. Additional last-minute information on this event will be posted on our website: http://jhwildlife.org/
